11/7/09 - Tribella, The Felons

…at Jack’s Backyard. My first time at this place, and I was impressed, for the most part. Really nice back patio, with tons of tables, chimineas and a pretty cool lookin stage. The only problem? I guess some of Jack’s neighbors ain’t exactly music fans, so they have to keep the volume set at "nursing home" level. And just after I complained to The Princess that The Felons weren’t loud enough, the owner came up and told Dave to take it down a notch. Hmmpf. Kind of a limitation on that place, as far as outdoor concerts go. I’m assuming the indoor ones don’t share that problem.

Anyways, The Felons started things off, and you know how I feel about them, so I won’t repeat myself. That night featured the debut of their fourth member on guitar. Sure, he’s no Fred, but I liked the additional guitar, which rounded out their sound quite nicely, and allowed them to rock out even more, at least before the owner went oldster on their ass. Really enjoyed the set, as usual. Tribella, from Austin, was up next. Three-gal band. Really liked what I heard - some very pretty, ethereal pop tunes. Beautiful voice on lead. Would definitely like to hear them again.
Fingerless Ghost was up next, but the Princess and I were freezing our t’s off, so we split before they started.

6/26/09 - The Felons, Lovie, Taylor Davis

...at Club Dada.

Taylor Davis opened. solo acoustic set. nice voice with great range. well-written songs, impressive guitar work. enjoyed it.

Lovie was up next. i've been wanting to hear this band live for quite a while now, and i was very happy that i finally got the chance. and i was very pleasantly surprised - i guess i was expecting sappy bubble-gum pop, but wow - this band can truly rock. very talented group of musicians, really nice collection of catchy, guitar-driven tunes with awesome vocals, harmonies, and keys, all really well executed (despite the sweltering climate). k, so i've made it clear, right? these ladies are fantastic musicians, etc.? cuz i can't write this without mentioning it - these girls are freakin' HOT. there's just somethin about women rockin' out in pigtails, ponytails, short plaid skirts, muscle tees, and knee socks. nice. (sue me - i'm a guy. with a pulse).
The Felons headlined - it was their CD release show (finally!). You know how much i love the felons, so i won't blather on. it was an awesome set, as usual. very cool to see an expanded line-up for the first few songs. these guys have truly come a long way in the last couple of years. a very talented group. the CD is amazing, in my opinion - well worth the wait. check it out.

3/30/09 - The Felons, All the Day Holiday

headed to club dada on monday night cuz it had been too long since i'd heard the felons. i was caught by surprise by this show, which i didn't see until i was at work on monday, so i've got no crappy pics for ya.

All the Day Holiday opened, and holy shit were these guys fantastic. they're from Ohio, and it looks like it hasn't been too long since they've seen the inside of a high school classroom. despite that, their sound was phenomenal. the voice on the lead was incredible. awesome drummer (who was situated up front for some reason - maybe due to his awesomeness?). wonderful guitar-work. fantastic collection of anthemic, soaring, head-bobbin' tunes - sort of a harder-edged Keane/Coldplay vibe. bought both their EP and sampler. full album due out soon. watch out for these guys.

The Felons were up next, and you know I loves me some felons, so i won't repeat myself. Needless to say, i loved their "old" songs, and sung along with every one of them, and i loved the new stuff too. dave and the boys have a knack for writing songs that just do it for me. look forward to seeing them again soon - i never get tired of 'em.

10/23/08 - Three Fantastic, The Felons, Fourth Frame

headed to dada once again on thursday night to catch the felons. the les savy fan showed up, too.

was amazed to see a huge crowd there when i walked in - very rare on a weeknight. the crowd was predominantly female, too - even rarer. after a while, though, our initial excitement waned as we used our keen observation skeels and noticed that these gals wouldn't be hookin up with any guys that evenin, IF you know what i mean. then, as the evening wore on, and everyone got socially lubricated, all doubt was removed. the LSF lamented "my powers are useless!". turns out they were all there to support

Fourth Frame (sorry - they don't seem to have a myspace page yet), who had their first show that night. really enjoyed these guys. very catchy pop, sometimes with a reggae feel. The LSF and I agreed - you'd never believe it was their first show - they seemed very polished and confident. very nice. wouldn't mind catching them again.

next up were the felons. you know i've loved the felons for quite a while now, and every time i see them, my opinion gets reaffirmed. i can't say enough about how talented these guys are, how incredible dave's voice is, what great songs they have put together. lookin forward to hearing more and more new stuff from them. for the last two songs, fred joined the band, and i have to admit, it put a smile on my face to see him up there again. 'twas a great finish to a great set.

last up was Three Fantastic, from houston. third time to see these guys. i tell ya, the first half of their set, they had the whole joint jumping, even causin the drunks sittin at the bar to shout "hey who the fuck are you guys?" between songs. but i have to say, the second half, they seemed to lose everyone. seemed like they dialed it back just a tad or somethin, cuz it just started to drag after a while. pretty good stuff, tho - good-timey rock-n-roll, very loungey sometimes, great voice on lead, great guitar playing. just maybe need to re-order the set a bit. freewayland was a highlight, fosho.

8/2/08 - Ghost of Blind Lemon showcase

headed down to club dada saturday night to catch the ghost of blind lemon showcase. happily, muh buddies tk and knuckles joined me for the festivities.

'twas a long night - we got down there at 6, so we had plenty of time to get really and truly plastered. i myself set a new record for # of ounces of vodker imbibed without having to use the facilities (yes, my parents are very proud). so you'll have to forgive me if some of the details are a little sketchy.

things got started with Kristina Morland. saw her a couple weeks ago and was blown away, and last night was no different. what an amazing talent. incredible voice, beautiful songs, great songwriting. last night, she had a violin player dude (who tk was totally gay for) accompanying her, which was a fantastic addition. the combination of the awesome vocals and the soulful music routinely gave me chills. wonderful set. probably the highlight of the evening for me (at least musically speaking). bot the cd.

next up was American Werewolf Academy. meh, they were ok - nice sound from the 3-piece band, but the vocals weren't the greatest. knuckles gave them a rating of NSM (not so much). Rahim Quazi continued things outside. some pretty nice acoustic pop. loved the french horn and trumpet. need to check out the cd that chris raves about. back inside were the felons. fred (the keyboard player) has recently gone off to pursue other endeavors, so the boys performed as a three-piece for the first time. there's no doubt - i missed fred's keys, but i still thought the set was great, and i look forward to what dave and the boys will do with their sound. talked to dave, and he said the stuff they've been writing lately has been a lot harder than their previous stuff. i definitely look forward to hearing that. those guys have enough talent that whatever they come up with, it's gonna be great. stay tuned, eh? up next was the cut*off, who i've seen multiple times now. these guys always put on a good show, with some very polished alt-country-tinged pop. last night seemed to be heavier on the country influence than the previous times i've seen 'em, but i dono - maybe not. (you see what i mean about the lack of detail? to further add to the problem caused by large amounts of alcyhol, at some point during the evening we actually started chatting with some females, which is so incredibly rare and shocking that i think i was momentarily disoriented and lost track of why i was there)

back inside were the backsliders, who knuckles is totally gay for (well, at least for the hot chick lead, which i guess means it's not gay after all). anyways, they always put on a rockin show. not exactly my thing, but it does get the ladies dancin. rose county fair was next. it was during their set that the interaction with the females was at a pretty high pitch, so i don't remember a damn thing about them. sorry. last up was Somebody's Darlin, who i've seen before. some really high-energy, bluesy alt-countryish rock with amazing vocals. all in all, a great night - lotsa booze, lotsa great people (wimmens, even!), and some really fine music. hope chris does this again soon.

6/5/08 - The Felons, the cut*off, Salim Nourallah

ahhh, yes - artist-in-residence thursday nights at dada, back in action after taking May off. wish they'd still start at 8:00, tho - that was nice.

June's artist in residence is Salim Nourallah, doing solo acoustic sets. now i understand why this dude gets so much pub. wonderful collection of dreamy, beautiful, sometimes beatles-esque pop tunes, with unique vocals, nice guitar work and instantly catchy melodies. really dug it. definitely made me want to catch him with the full band - i will be watchin for that. next up was the cut*off, from Ft. Worth. definitely enjoyed their set this time much more than the first time i saw them back in november, when it seemed like they played a lot of covers. nice set full of muscular, slightly psychedelic pop tunes. they easily win the award for Band With The Highest Number of Girlfriends Who Remind Me of Jennifer Love Hewitt. they were joined on stage at one point by Jenn Nabb and Salim, who both added some nice vocal touches. definitely want to catch them again. last up was the felons, and i've gushed way too much already about this incredible band on these pages - it's starting to get embarassing. suffice it to say, thursday night's performance did not disappoint. it seems that i NEVER get tired of hearing these guys.

5/24/08 - The Felons, Salute, The Farstar

didn't seem to be very many choices this past weekend, show-wise, but thank gawd the felons continued their 'Play Damn-Near Every Weekend In May' Tour, with a stop this past saturday at the dee-dub (that's the doublewide, dontcha know).


first up was the farstar. really enjoyed their set. 5-man band - two guitars, bass, drums and lead sanger, who played a little keys ever now and then. mostly, he rocked back and forth with the microphone and emoted, in that oh-so-Firewater-band fashion. but not to worry, what came out of the speakers was very un-Firewater-like (which is good, in my opinion ('case you hadn't figgered that out)). some really good indie pop/rock, definitely above average. very polished. nice harmonies between lead and geetar player. lead vox not overly strong, but got the job done. was thinkin about buyin the (salim nourallah co-produced) EP, but muh buddy bill beat me to it and let me borrow it (thanks, bill!). i'll be keeping my eye out for these guys in the future - wouldn't mind catching them again.

next up was salute, which i have a hard time saying in anything other than the old HeeHaw fashion: saaaaaa-LUTE! (google it, youngsters). anyhows, if southern rock is your thang, you can't do much better than these guys. 3-man band, sounds like 5. great geetar work, fantastic voice on lead.

you know southern rock ain't my thang, tho, so after a few songs i wandered out to the patio to chat wif the aforementioned bill and the ghost of blind lemon. love talkin music with fellow fanatics.


last up was the felons, and i just don't understand how you could not love this band. from the dark, moody anthems like Worse for Wear, to the infectious, keyboard-driven poppy greatness that is My Best State (which always manages to get just about everyone moving (or at least nodding their heads)), these guys play some of the best pop songs in town. and after saturday night, their stuff can also be categorized as Music For Drunk-Ass Chicks To Dry-Hump Their Roided-Out Boyfriends To. vurry entertaining. anyways, their next show is June 5th at Dada. check 'em out.

5/17/08 - The Felons, mr. Gnome, Sunward, Falken's Maze

this one's gonna have to lean more towards the "photo-journal" side of things, folks, being as how i had a pretty rough night on saturday. i over-drank, and i paid for it, at one point having to, uh, use the facilities for terribly unpleasant purposes. i'm pretty pissed at myself, since i was really looking forward to a great night of music (my two favorite local bands in one show!), and i don't remember anything, except for a few songs at the end of the felons' set and a couple conversations i had early in the morning as i sobered up. i definitely heard all four bands (i have the pics to prove it), and i'm sure i enjoyed it at the time, but if you can't remember it, what's the point? oh well, another learning experience for me (i'm what you'd call a rookie when it comes to the drank (that's a long, tirade-filled tangent that i'll skip for now)), so i'm not that good at it yet. workin on it hard, tho. real hard.

i do remember that my buddy josephus made it out, tho, wantin to see if the felons and sunward could live up to all the hype i've been spewing. you can read his take on the evening here.

first up was Falken's Maze, and all i can say is that i thought it was unusual that there were 3 keyboard players, and no guitars. that's really all i got.

next up was the greatness of Sunward. absolutely love these guys - see my previous raves here and here. i am sure they kicked my ass again saturday, just sure of it.

next up was mr. Gnome, from cleveland. two-man band: smokin-hot chick on guitar, dude on drums. cool trip-rock, like portishead on roids, howling soulful voice on lead, some really cool, unusual percussion playin by the dude (this is all based on a short video i took of these two, so...).

last up were my boys, the felons (previous write-ups here and here), whose music always takes me to a happy place.

after the felons finished up, dave and the guys decided to play a few radiohead covers in honor of their first dallas appearance in 10 years. i loves me some radiohead, so that was a nice finish to the evening.

speaking of that, i was actually at that radiohead show in '98 at the music hall in fair park, when they toured for OK Computer, and i think i know why they've skipped over dallas ever since then. during the whole concert, thom didn't say one word to the audience - no interaction at all, until one point late in the set, when he walks up to the microphone and says "hello, dallas"...{wild screaming from audience}..."pretty fookin dull in here". of course the audience cheered for that, too, prolly not quite realizing they'd just been dissed. ah, well, 'twas a great show anyways.

5/15/08 - Symphonic, 6thGrade, Wind Ensemble

omigawd, what a night. 7 bands, no cover, free parking, early start (6:30!), right in my backyard. look out, deep ellum, your turf is being challenged.


i was really only there for three bands, so i'll only comment on them..


first up was Symphonic, straight outta McKinney (represent!). 60-70 people on stage - no kiddin. amazing, the variety of sounds comin from all those people - horns, woodwinds, drums, etc. played a raucous version of "marching marines" - melted my face. of special note was the lead bassoon player - unbelievably talented musician. i was transfixed. wanted to buy the cd, but they don't have one yet. shame.


next up was 6th Grade, and holy smokes, were they awesome. i fell in love immediately. right up my alley. fantastic collection of indie show tunes and marches. definitely want to catch them again soon. i thot the snare drumming was incredible, and i dont usually notice the drummer. talked to the snare drummer after the show and babbled on (coherently, mind you) about how amazing her performance was. when i asked her when their EP was comin out, she said "what's an EP?". anyhows, check this band out if you get a chance.


headlinin the show was Wind Ensemble, another 70-man band. omigawd, i couldn't bleebe what i was hearin - i just closed my eyes and blissed out for thirty minutes. heard some Holst, also some Sondheim. vocals were a bit screamy, but OK. i was absolutely blown away by the lead oboe player - what a talent. i usually whip out my earplugs when i see the oboe, but man, can she play that thing beautifully - no squeakin or nothin. catch this band while you can, before they blow up...


all in all, an amazing night.

5/10/08 - Somebody's Darling, The Felons, Escort Service, Romp Almighty

Headed down to Deep Ellum on saturday night to catch the felons and romp almighty. got there way too early cuz i got suckered in by romp's bulletin that said they'd start at 8. cant bleebe i fell for that - oldest trick in the book. anyhows, got there early enough to get the last free parking spot in DE (yay, me), and had a chance to talk to laura and trey (romp almighty), and for some reason decided to inform them of my one-time trot-line fishin prowess (ah, me). went back to dada and also had lots of time to chat with my man fred (keyboard whiz-kid from the felons, photographer extraordinaire, and Juno-writer Diablo Cody's Number One Fan (btw, did you know she used to be a stripper? it's true!)).


went back to the allgood cafe at 9 for romp almighty. been waitin forever to see these guys again, cuz i fell in love with 'em at haileys awhile back (see review here). once again, i was transfixed - beautiful voice, totally cool fuzzed-out synthesizer, great guitar playin, haunting melodies. fantastic. only complaint - the sound system at the allgood really just wasnt up to the task. at hailey's that night, part of the greatness of it was being enveloped by their sound and laura's voice, and the allgood just aint set up for that. here's hoping laura and trey start playin more venues that can really showcase their stuff. they deserve it. went back later and got a free EP from laura, who told me their full-length should be out in about three months or so.
back at dada, spent some time on the patio with the usual crew around there - great people. back inside, escort service started off the evening. some decent guitar-based pop/rock, reminded me of bowling for soup sometimes, sometimes the foo fighters. the greatness of eric neal on bass and backup vocals. perty good.

next up were my boys the felons. i've raved over and over about these guys, and i've never been disappointed by one of their shows (see my previous reviews here and here). dave's voice just amazes me. so listen up - the felons are playing a lot of shows in the next couple months - do yourself a favor and check them out.

last up was Somebody's Darling. holy smokes, can that woman belt it out. i'm sure she gets beaten down by the constant comparisons to Janis Joplin, but the similarities are inescapable. what a ball of fire and energy (and hair!) on stage. if you dig the whole alt-country-rock thang, check out this band.
